Happy September!

Meaghan CursonsUncategorized

We figured September is a perfect time to reboot, refresh and get the word out to our community about where we’re at with the Cumberland Forest Campaign.

We’re 1/3 of the way there! That’s right. We’ve hit the $400,000 mark in our campaign to protect an additional 52
hectares of the Cumberland Forest. It’s been a truly epic year and we’re so amazed by the energy and passion of our community.

The fundraisers, events, business incentives and donations – they’re all adding up! From the $2500 from Rock the Block, the $3000 from Cumberland Elementary, the $7000 from The Great Valley Rally and thousands more from yoga events, carwashes, art shows, clothing and tea sales and more – this summer has rocked! We’re also closing in on $8000/month in monthly donors and that keeps growing!

We’ve also just started some really exciting work to learn more about the ecological significance of the Cumberland Forest. Did you know that this Forest is part of the Puntledge River Watershed AND the Trent River Watershed? Did you know the Cumberland Forest is home to at risk species of birds and frogs? Did you know that Perseverance Creek is salmon bearing? The Cumberland Forest is an important part of a natural wilderness corridor that runs from the Beaufort Mountains to Comox Lake to the Ocean. Keeping this forest healthy and standing has immense value to our community, to wildlife, and to our watershed.

Thank you. This community is amazing. You are amazing.

But we’re not there yet. We’re going to have to keep our heads down and work hard meet our 2016 deadlines! This fall we have SO much going on and we wanted to give you a heads up on some key upcoming dates. You can get involved as a volunteer, race participant, donor or just help spread the word. It takes a community to buy a forest.

October 2-4 Foggy Mountain Fall Fair: We’re co-presenting this event with the Cumberland Museum and the CV Community Arts Council. On Saturday we’ll be on site, selling raffle tickets, holding our fall plant sale and hosting walking tours. We’re also running the Cumberland Pie of the Year Contest! 100% of proceeds from the contest and Auction will go to our campaign. Mark the date and get baking!

October 26th Perseverance Trail Run: This is an incredible day for the Cumberland Forest. A secret forest fairy has pledged to match, dollar for dollar, all funds raised by this event. You can register for the race, pledge funds to a racer or pick up tickets for the Perseverance Party for the Forest, a huge afternoon party and community celebration to raise a bunch of money – all in one day! Check out our website and Facebook event for more info or go to www.perseverancetrailrun.com.
