Time to TREE UP for our Forest in the Village!

Join the Cumberland Forest Society and the Village of Cumberland for our annual urban tree planting party on Sunday Octobert 19th. Our goal for 2025 is to plant 100 trees and shrubs as part of a Community Wide Planting Day on Sunday October 19th! Villagers can sign up NOW to purchase and plant a specially selected tree or shrub selected for drought tolerance, Fire Smart alignment and habitat and biodiversity values.

Did you know the Urban Forest of Cumberland is in decline? Many of the large trees planted during Cumberland’s early settler years are reaching the end of their life cycle, urban densification (while great for housing needs) ultimately results in tree and soil removal, and new developments have replaced forested areas.

Urban forests offer environmental, habitat, hydrological, social, and cultural values and support community climate resilience. Forest in the Village is a Cumberland Community Forest Society led initiative all about supporting biodiversity, wildfire resilience, and the goals set out in Cumberland’s Urban Forest Management Plan.

There are 3 ways to participate! You can buy a tree, donate to have a tree planted on public land or commit to purchasing and planting a tree of your choice.

Our goal, a reflection of the UFMP, is to help increase canopy cover in Cumberland’s urban areas from 20% to 30% by 2040.

In 2023, we kick started this project by planting 125 trees in the Village to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Cumberland’s incorporation. Join us in 2025 as we continue this legacy project of stewardship and climate resilience – by and for our community.

Trees are available first come, first order so don’t delay in signing up.

Thanks to the Comox Valley FireSmart and Wildfire Resilience Committee, Mumby Aboriculture and the Village of Cumberland for their support for this annual campaign!

If charitable giving is part of your financial strategy this year, we would be honoured to be considered.
